Malena ends up objectifying the character of the movie's title. Also, the young boy's emotional investment with Malena is never convincing, as she doesn't feel like a three-dimensional person.

A film of beautiful simplicity. Not made for the American market — viewers in South America, Europe, the Middle East, or Asia may understand it more instinctively. At its center is a silent, enigmatic woman about whom we know almost nothing, yet everyone has something to say. That contradiction is the point, and it’s handled brilliantly. For American audiences, the characters may feel distant or unfamiliar, even difficult to relate to. Malèna asks for a cultural and emotional literacy that goes beyond dialogue or plot. Those with a deep sensitivity to unspoken feelings, social cruelty, and quiet tragedy should give it a try.

Filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são mais ou menos, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom, poderia colocar o nome do filme de Renato amoroso, pois o garoto é o protagonista do filme
