Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. In a remote fishing village, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn, if only the ship sails again. Joining the crew is Nick (George MacKay), desperate to provide for his young family, and Liam (Callum Turner), a mysterious drifter eager to escape his past. After a successful voyage, they return to harbor, only to find that nothing is as they remember it. Shooting on a 16mm Bolex camera and constructing all the sound in post, Mark Jenkin writes, directs, edits and scores a haunting and hallucinatory time-travel mystery that further solidifies him as one of the most distinct, singular artists working in film today. Jenkin conducts a cinematic séance, conjuring a portal into another world that forces us to confront the past and our relationship to it.

Critics Consensus

Weaving a hypnotic tapestry of bold analogue imagery, spellbinding storytelling, and mesmeric sound, Rose of Nevada reinforces Mark Jenkins as a uniquely singular directorial voice.

Rose of Nevada is so uniquely its own thing, I strain for any comparison at all. Jenkin works the aforementioned technical restraints of his chosen vintage technology to extraordinary effect.

I’m lackadaisical about wherever the story intended to leave me, and unsure of its ruminations on whether the needs of the many outweigh those of the few. But I admire the way “Rose of Nevada” tells its story. Sometimes, my admiration is enough.

The result is a film that is haunting and singular – a furnace-blast of the past reshaped and refashioned for our modern times. All aboard.

Mark Jenkin crafts a haunting, beautifully textured ghost story where memory, identity, and time collide. Its stunning 16mm photography creates an unforgettable atmosphere, even if the film’s ambiguity sometimes leaves its ideas underdeveloped.

[Mark Jenkin's] filmmaking is among the most stimulating to come out of that region recently , connecting us with a space that defies the linear conception of time and creating wonders like this one. [Full review in Spanish]

Featuring working class characters and their circumstances that Jenkin is familiar with growing up, he beautifully crafts a sort of a low-fi sci-fi with sodden social realism.

The visuals help bring us into the story. The 16mm look works here. A film about time and place that evokes the past look of films and tv specials, to tell the story of time gone and returned.

Such a missed opportunity, the premise would seem to offer a number of possibilities and allow for a number of threads to run through it simultaneously. But the film seemed a bit one-dimensional, repeating the same thing over and over and showing the lead actor's same determined facial expression over and over. I thought much more could have been done with this, and it left me wondering why the given material couldn't have been run through in about 25 minutes. Everyone gets to have their own view, but mine is that this didn't strike me as good value.

Really slow to start. It felt like the director was more keen to photograph stills all over. The 16mm was an interesting choice. My biggest issue is, the movie was 95% men POV. Women had to have been more than half of the story, but they were used as props. Maybe this is good for a slice of society, but not anyone I know.

I'd like to hire the Rose of Nevada to take me back two hours in time so I'd know not to sit through this pretentious piece of flotsam.

I liked the atmosphere more than the actual story. There are some beautiful moments and great performances, but the pacing was a little too slow for me.
