James R @RT71252014 2d Alien is my favourite movie of all time, and even I hate this one. The thing about Covenant is that Ridley Scott seemed more interested in making a movie about an AI jealous of humanity that tries to create its own artificial life, and then realized "Oh crap, we need to throw a Xenomorph in there." The actual alien portion of the movie is really at the very end and is only maybe 10-20 minutes long. This movie is kind of just too long and boring. I don't feel connected to the characters (I don't even remember the main character's name), and they all make stupid, irrational decisions. The best part of the movie was Michael Fassbender's David. He's always an interesting character. But, yeah. The Alien franchise has a few bad movies, and this is one of them. See more C J @X300-Chris May 24 Ridley Scott needs to stop! What could have been a great sequel exploring ideas brought up in Prometheus instead plays out like a generic horror film. I miss when the alien franchise had good writing, characters and creative direction. The only good parts of this film was Michael Fassbender’s acting and the new creature. I feel like this one’s a bit better than Prometheus, since that one was so fixated on philosophical ideas. This one gives you more action and gore that we can appreciate, and it’s more entertaining. But, sometimes, it does try to veer back into Prometheus territory, exploring these themes and asking these kinds of questions again. And it feels like it’s trying to merge two things that never fully gel together, like it’s trying to be two different movies in one. It also has some more dumb decisions from supposedly smart characters, and kinda cheapens some events from Prometheus by quickly explaining them away, making that whole journey feel kinda pointless. But, overall, this is a solid enough film. It’s entertaining, it’s got the gore and action that you want from an Alien film, and- though it doesn’t do too good of a job at it- is thematically rich. Definitely a relic of a bygone sensibility, but entertaining enough I suppose.
