As it circles the life and legacy of actor, artist and filmmaker Dennis Hopper, the documentary "Along for the Ride" uses the standard tools of the medium, but it follows his renegade spirit and produces something entirely unique.

Surprisingly moving documentary, especially if one only knows Dennis Hopper from the handful of mainstream movies in the latter half of his career. He wasn't only a looney tunes powder keg, he was a sensitive introvert - devoted to the arts and supporting indigenous people thousands of miles from Hollywood. This is an often beautiful patchwork of a tribute - crisply photographed in Ansel Adams black-and-white with the only colour sequences coming from the archive footage. Makes you want to chase down Mad Dog Morgan, Out of the Blue and, not least, The Last Movie.
