What to Know

Critics Consensus

Going all in with a committed Colin Farrell and a memorably opulent presentation of Macau, Ballad of a Small Player too often squanders its virtues by doubling down on excess to diminishing returns.

Colin is just outstanding in this film. He's fully and completely committed to the character. Go to Full Review

It's very loud, sleazy, lurid, and decadent -- and I enjoyed it. Go to Full Review

Farrell commits with an energetic physical performance, and Berger’s camera revels in all the flaws of the star’s middle-age handsomeness, but their efforts strain what is little more than a simple, feel-good redemption story. Go to Full Review

The film never quite coheres as a whole, and its twists are unlikely to astonish, but Farrell remains a constant source of fascination. Go to Full Review

There’s a twist, but overall, it’s remarkably uneven in a way that All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave weren’t. Go to Full Review
James Croot The Post NZ Jan 2
It’s not perfect, a mid-section interlude is a touch ponderous and a late revelation lacks the emotional impact it probably should have, but this Ballad is more proof of why both Berger and Farrell are currently at the top of their game. Go to Full Review

Deal Mae In Oct 19 Saw the twist coming, so only half a star off. Colin Farrell is a raw nerve in this, with his character’s blurry need for self-implosion redeemed by his capacity for change. If his world feels decadently claustrophobic when he is at his worst, just wait, the payoff is worth the slow burn. See more William T @HelloIamMiru 6h VERY in line with Taoism and East Asia culture. When I first saw the movie took place in HK, I scoffed thinking it's a cheap link to Chinese culture. It wasn't. People saying the plot is too ambigious is missing the very point of Taoism. Excellent movie. Much better representation than Crazy Rich Asians in my opinion. See more ella may o @Movieaddict4ever 13h This is actually my first movie review ever!!! When I saw the rating, I gotta write my reviews! First of all, I never watch trailers of any movie, so I have no idea what the story of this movie is! I just want to see it because it is Colin Farrell! But, this movie really hit me hard, I don’t know why, maybe the spiritual side but I love this movie! Deym! See more Nick H @Nickcanada202 4d I’m honestly shocked by how many people can’t see past the surface of Ballad of a Small Player. If you think this movie is just saying "gambling is bad," you’re only reading the base layer. Gambling is the mechanism — not the message. This is a film about trying to escape who you are. About reinventing yourself, changing locations, personalities, and routines, only to realize your demons travel with you. He crosses the globe and still can’t outrun himself. We all do this in smaller ways — bury parts of ourselves, avoid hard truths, pretend we’ve moved on. The film understands something simple and brutal: you can run from your problems, but they will always find you. If you missed that, you missed the movie. See more Ben N @Newms73 5d Cinematography was fantastic, as well as the acting from Colin. A haunting yet comedic film of greed, decadence and ultimately, redemption. See more Jonathan P @Jonreb31 Feb 14 First, I loved the cinematography and themes created throughout this movie. The acting from Colin was very compelling from the start and it kept me glued to the screen. Sometimes the screenplay was a bit lacking, but I think it did what was needed to create the story and push things towards the central pieces: Money. Greed. Gambling. And honestly these are fascinating topics for our time as humans on earth. Or terrifying topics. The character basically worships money as God. The be-all and end-all of everything. It's everything and it's by the end it's "nothing." It's definitely not clear that money is still not this character's God at the end. Maybe the moral of the story is that as humans we are so consumed by money overall that we are caught in the middle with a catch-22. Crazy in acquiring it (The extreme being a dead-to-shame elite class) and also crazy in not acquiring it (The extreme being broke for your whole life. In debt. Unable to live in society) See more Read all reviews
