Peter V 1h The film is a visually appealing black-and-white production, with refined sets that reflect the higher-class society of England at the time. As a silent film, it relies heavily on body language and performance, with minimal titles between scenes–be this unspoken dialogue and narration. Nevertheless, the action flows smoothly, and the expressionist performances effectively convey the story. John Barrymore’s performance in the title role is exceptional, and his transformation is impressive, with makeup that would have deserved an Oscar if they were awarded at the time.
