Johnathon W @Hoppynsc Feb 7 Surprisingly sophisticated sequel that explores the curse of being a vampire along with some nice subtext. Gloria Holden is superb in the title role as someone suffering from being a vampire, even going so far as to burn her father's body to escape it. Behind the camera, director Lambert Hillyer crafts a solid film with some interesting subtext (lesbianism is more than hinted at). While a bit slow, probably the best of the straight Dracula sequels. See more Michael C @Michael71 01/21/2025 "Dracula's Daughter" is a good movie in the Universal Monsters franchise. It is no classic, but it is a good movie nonetheless. One of the things that made me like the movie was that it deviated somewhat from formulaic plot devices. I liked that the title character tried to be human again and tried to rid herself of the vampire curse. Though she eventually accepts the curse, that small plot point was a smart move by the writers of "Dracula's Daughter". I also liked seeing some of the sets used in the original 1931 classic "Dracula" starring the late Bela Lugosi in the role that defined his career for better or worse. Returning to the title character, the late Gloria Holden does a very good job in the role of Countess Marya Zaleska. The supporting cast is quite good also. The late Edward Van Sloan reprises the role of Professor Van Helsing here and he has not missed a beat. The late Otto Kruger is terrific as Dr. Jeffrey Garth. The numerous movies in the Universal Monsters film franchise, while not all classics, are certainly not boring and rather entertaining. "Dracula's Daughter" is no exception. This is a lesser-known classic 1930s Universal Studios monster flick, with some heavy hitters in the cast, including Otto Kruger and Gloria Holden. In a lesser role, prior to her journalistic career, Hedda Hopper made an appearance. The film had a more serious plot line than the standard from that series of flicks, which picks up after Dracula's death. His vampire daughter seeks help from a scientist and psychiatrist to break the spell of the vampire curse. See more CodyZamboni Z @CodyZamboni 01/12/2025 Tame horror film, No scares, Thin plodding story, Wrong decision to have Van Helsing take a back seat to his psychologist friend, Dracula's daughter does very few onscreen vampire things , except sleep in coffin, Aside from Van Helsing, only other cast member who stands out is the psychologist's pretty assistant, She's fun, and is much more interesting than the boring lead vampire. But it was nice seeing the old castle Dracula sets. That franchise is Frankenstein. For just about every other film in this original cinematic universe there was a quick decline in quality, and this one is just one of the first that began the trend. "Dracula's Daughter" is the sequel to "Dracula"(1931). I give them credit that they try something new for their sequel. They are not in a hurry to resurrect Dracula and have him do his usual stuff. This one follows the titular daughter as she desires to no longer have the curse of being a vampire. This movie picks up right where the previous one ended. It goes through all the pointless paperwork that the previous one rightfully skipped. This movie takes a long time to get to the actual story and then by the time they get there it abruptly ends. Character motivations are unclear, and for a lot of the movie they are doing uninteresting things. The movie has some interesting ideas and unique characters. I cut it some slack considering that the movie is as old as it is. The concepts just do not come together in execution. This Dracula film really does drag. See more Read all reviews
