st d @ray-con2 Aug 9 This is a low budget movie, and there's hardly any action, but, for what it is, it's really outstanding. The writing is intelligent: nothing cliche or dumbed-down. The actors became their characters -- I had no sense of acting. And, all three characters (including the robot's head) grew on me as I watched and I liked and respected each one. I can't find any fault in this movie the day after watching it -- thus 5 stars. Not for everyone of course, or for every mood, but a hidden gem (and they've become so rare anymore -- thankfully, no agenda or preaching or politics in this movie -- just a simple movie about life and existence). See more 04/21/2019 A quiet movie for people who like movies like "Bokeh," and.... other quiet movies that I can't think of right now that explore the human condition in seemingly post-apocalyptic worlds. You know, the ones with few characters whose conversation represents various sides of the existential question, "Is life only about survival, or is there or something more?" Two traveling companions and a robot head (yeah, it sounds weird, but it works) cross paths in the desert, and join together on a journey of faith in the impossible. There's nothing flashy here, and some nice construction of the fictional-but-earthlike world they live in. A little slow in the beginning, but stick with it if you are someone who enjoys thinky movies with a "we are better together" vibe. The only reason I give it 3.5 stars rather than a full 4 is the simple picky gripe that these two fair-skinned protagonists wander in what appears to be a desert for weeks, but never burn. Yeah, I know, picky! (And, you know, that 5th star is reserved for truly great movies, like "Wonder Woman" and "The Shawshank Redemption.") There's quirk but it doesn't feel forced, and there isn't a single cynical frame in the film, making it something that feels fresh. The message behind Ohs and Sisson's film is a simple one, but a fundamental human truth that we need to be reminded of now more than ever. See more Andrew N @RT99220955 01/13/2019 This is a slow burn movie that takes you on a journey to possibly a different dimension where we watch Lernert and Rola walk across a desert, sometime in the near or distant future, to find the mythical Crystal Lake, with a little help from a disembodied robot head. Basically, nothing happens but the way nothing happens is brilliantly done and our two protagonists hold the story together easily and skilfully. You are interested in them both and hope that they reach their goal despite the probabilities being against them. The direction is light, and awkward silences or quiet moments are allowed to linger, sometimes uncomfortably but correctly so. It is not a movie you'll watch and come out feeling renewed or ready to conquer the world, but this is a story that will linger, especially with me, for quite a while. If only just for it's simplicity and dreamy quality. They don't make movies like this anymore, I don't think they ever did. See more Read all reviews
