After the death of her famous opera-singing aunt, Paula (Ingrid Bergman) is sent to study in Italy to become a great opera singer as well. While there, she falls in love with the charming Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer). The two return to London, and Paula begins to notice strange goings-on: missing pictures, strange footsteps in the night and gaslights that dim without being touched. As she fights to retain her sanity, her new husband's intentions come into question.

Ingrid Bergman’s outstanding performance is the key to the film’s success. Her subtle yet sincere portrayal of Paula brings forth the storyline’s tense atmosphere and suspenseful drama. Gaslight kept me on the edge of my seat for its entirety, proving it’s a timeless piece that can be enjoyed by a modern audience.

It does, at times, feel like a B-grade 'Rebecca' in its pseudo-Gothic atmosphere and what appears to be the build-up of the mental deterioration of the female character before another plot is revealed, but George Cukor's tight direction and personality over 'Gaslight' makes it a solid success. Ingrid Bergman's character is written to be a great deal too stupid and wishy-washy even for her time, which is my main problem, but she manages to make it work within a story that you can tell definitely began on the stage.

A dated psychological thriller that benefited low standards that’s progressed into a relevant argument of manipulative abuse, pulling off a surprising observative character study regarding mental fragility that was decently manifested tackling our sympathetic paranoia through Ingrid Bergman’s form but finds elliptical illogic through Charles Boyer’s unconvincing posture. (B)

Simply put - THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE! A flawless cast led by Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer in a convincing romantic tragedy, rooted in a mysteriously haunting compulsion that is brilliantly resolved in the end. A thriller that relies on no cheap shots or bombast. Every aspect of this movie is admirably crafted. A genuine rarity.
