This film had the merit of being an unexpected and now cult success, much like the rest of de Funès’ career. While it doesn’t feature any truly memorable lines, it remains a pleasure to revisit. See more 05/04/2014 "FRENCH COPS AND NUDISTS" -'Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez' is a 1964 French comedy and the first part of the popular 'Gendarme' film series starring the most known comedian that France ever had, Louis de Funès (La Grande Vadrouille). These movies remind me of my childhood, when I was forced to watch them with my dad on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I could only remember the part where the cops tried to catch the nudists on the beach and the speeding nun. The humor and facial expressions of the main protagonist are priceless, but I must confess that the film is dated and I did struggle a bit to keep focused. But that's just me. Five more sequels followed, with the same cast. 'Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez' is a definite must-see classic in French Cinema. Hardworking policemen Ludovic Cruchot (de Funès) has been reassigned from his small town village to the busy seaside of Saint-Tropez. Together with his daughter Nicole he goes there and meets the other cops, who lack discipline, and his chief sergeant major Gerber. While Nicole works herself into trouble to impress the local youngsters in order to make friends, Cruchot and the other policemen have to think of a plan to catch a group of persistent nudists. Thankfully, the subplot about the car and the painting instils some life back into the film, even though Girault's chops in directing action appear rather restricted and opportunities are missed. De Funès, despite seemingly holding back a bit, is an agreeable presence, and "Le gendarme de Saint-Tropez", although dated, definitely has its moments.
