After the Civil War, ranch owner Gil Hanley helps a stranger in desperate need of medical attention. Soon he is questioned by Union soldiers about the stranger, who turns out to be an ex-Confederate soldier. Hanley, also an ex-Confederate, is unjustly convicted as a conspirator and sentenced to life in a brutal desert prison in New Mexico. After battling his tough cellmate and a sadistic guard, Hanley tries to stop a plague from overwhelming the prison.

08/17/2010 Solid little wester that has a story along the same lines of the superior "The Prisoner of Shark Island". Sterling Hayden turns in one of his typical oddly mannered but good performances, but I think I most enjoyed Ward Bond as the cruel prison warden. See more 05/26/2010 Obscure but decent western with many familiar faces going through their paces. See more 12/19/2009 Good story, nicely paced and well acted. Ward Bond is particularly good.
