Strong performances all around and very atmospheric and creepy. The lead blonde is gorgeous. We need a quality physical media release in the US. We follow a fairly classic story of witchcraft in New England, where a witch is burned in 1692 and curses the village. 260 years later, a young student investigates the phenomenon by visiting the village, which lies in a derelict area, and discovers many things... The film's atmosphere is very carefully crafted, very gloomy, with few resources and a running time of 1 hour 12 minutes, something that would be unthinkable today. Christopher Lee inhabits the character of the teacher with a passion for the occult, and it's a treat to see him as a young man. I found the cinematography very beautiful and disturbing, even more so than the horror scenes. The hotel proprietress is quite disturbing, and there's an atmosphere of witchcraft that's quite well done. The village seems to have come straight out of Lovecraft's The Shadow over Innsmout, and I find the parallel very interesting as the inhabitants resemble the image I have of those in Innsmouth, I almost expected the host to be called Gilman. What can I say about this film? It's got an atmosphere all its own, and it's very successful. It reminds me of The House on Haunted Hill in its staging and atmosphere, so it's a success!
