A gently humanist story of the American West from Max Walker-Silverman (A Love Song), Rebuilding follows Dusty (Josh O'Connor), a reserved, divorced father whose ranch has burned down in a devastating wildfire. Now living in a trailer community on a government-run campsite, Dusty finds solace with his new neighbors who have also lost everything, quietly reassembles his life, and starts reconnecting with his ex-wife Ruby (Meghann Fahy) and young daughter Callie-Rose (Lily LaTorre). Filmed against the rapturous backdrop of southern Colorado, Rebuilding is a ruminative, moving portrait of resilience and human connection in the wake of loss.

A lovely rendering of what feels like half a story. It’s not the action its title promises, but the preceding moment of retreat to lick one’s wounds. Go to Full Review

It is another highly sympathetic performance from O’Connor, who converts the British reticence of his earlier roles into Dusty’s strength and quiet vulnerability. Go to Full Review

The film is rich with an American indie-movie sincerity that can be off-putting -- a bit like having a conversation with someone who insists on too much meaningful eye contact. But somehow it coalesces into something gently profound. Go to Full Review

Simply observing the whipped-dog look of a slouched and restrained Josh O’Connor is enough for the viewer to feel the loss of that blue-barn ranch as their own. (...) It stumbles in an excessively scripted and artificial ending. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

[It's] entirely convincing in suggesting that the opportunity to reimagine what a home can mean provides them with a palpable sense of hope. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

It's impossible not to see echoes of a Western, although here the focus isn't on depicting a territory to be conquered, but rather a space of loss, waiting, and possible repair. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The mute, remote and unyielding vistas characterize the intimate story of a miniscule society whose homes and aspirations have been consumed by forest conflagrations. The film may not appeal to those who hunger for constant explosive action; it is more likely to find its home in the sad hearts of those who miss the childhood of their children.
