Chris S @Janomi Jul 19 The Eagle has a few bright spots, especially its rugged Roman frontier atmosphere. The forests, mountains, mud, mist, and isolated tribal lands make northern Britain feel cold, dangerous, and unknown, giving the movie a harsh survival quality that fits the material. The search for the lost eagle standard is a strong, simple hook. Marcus is not just trying to recover an object; he is trying to restore his family’s honor and understand what happened to his father’s legion. Channing Tatum brings physical seriousness to Marcus, while Jamie Bell gives Esca a sharper, more conflicted edge. Their uneasy relationship is the most interesting part of the film. The problem is that the movie feels smaller and duller than the premise promises. The lost legion, Roman conquest, tribal resistance, and wilderness journey should create a more thrilling adventure, but the pacing drags and the emotion stays muted. It has atmosphere, but not enough momentum. See more S P @S1337 Mar 20 A beautiful film exploring honor and fidelity, concepts that are foreign for many today, which is what can explain the low rating, but set yourself back in Roman times and this film is great. The plot is good, great performance that transports you thousands of years back. Touches concepts of pity, forgiveness, guilt, betrayal and finally redemption. A very well rounded film on all aspects. A hidden gem for those who like the period or who want to expose themselves to these strong values. Makes you want to read the book that inspired it by Rosemary Sutcliff. But no. Full fledged modern American accents twanging around through the story. Ruined it from the start. Alright i'll bite - what other accents shoyld theyve incorporated? Probably just some sort of neutral British accent or maybe just English with a continental lilt. ANYTHING but American in a story at the root of European, yes - EUROPEAN history. Many think Channing Tatum acts like a statue, but do you think the real Roman soldier was any different?, besides, it's a movie ... Script is good, directing also good and great cinematography. Amazing location shots. Whole cast convincing in character. Quite a journey, also learned a lot about the real events, although the vanishing of the 5000 soldiers really remain a mystery.
