The movie centers on Paul Carpenter (Patrick Gibson) and Sophie Pettingel (Sophie Wilde), lowly, put-upon interns who begin working at the mysterious London firm J.W. Wells & Co., and become increasingly aware that their employers are anything but conventional. Charismatic villains Humphrey Wells (Christoph Waltz), the CEO of the company, and middle manager Dennis Tanner (Sam Neill) are disrupting the world of magic by bringing modern corporate strategy to ancient magical practices, and Paul and Sophie discover the true agenda of the vast corporation.

There’s ramshackle funhouse charm to spare here, and while the plot occasionally trips over the odd loose floorboard, the fun ideas and game performances soon pick it back up.

If the tension flickers on and off... The Portable Door never entirely loses its edge, thanks largely to an irascible Neill as Wells’s right-hand man, and a sharp-tongued sensibility reminiscent of Roald Dahl.

Performances are all competent (this is THE year of Sophie Wilde, after all), the visual effects deliver, and in general, “The Portable Door” manages to have a fun and eccentric tone, which ended up charming me. Full review in Spanish.

Having read the novel well over a decade ago and the subsequent series that it began, I really hoped they would leave it open for another film with the continuing storyline. I was pleased to see that they left plenty of room. That being said, if I didnt know anything about the story or the book this is based on, I know I would have been a bit confused at multiple parts that weren't explained well (and are explained much later on in the book series). If you are unfamiliar entirely with Tom Holt's novels, you may not enjoy this as much as people who have read and are familiar with his work.

This is not a bad movie. It starts slow, and a bit confusing, in the beginning. But once it gets going, and you start to get the idea of what it is about, then it becomes interesting, and enjoyable. Just give it a chance. I recommend seeing this film.

3.0 stars; The majority of the stars in this rating are for the excellent special effects and Patrick Gibson's innocent performance in the lead role. The plot was good. Anyone who remembers their first days at a new job can identify with the emotions Gibson's character experiences. If you are looking for anything more than a standard 'wizard' movie, you will be disappointed. Enjoy it for what it is.
