Critics Consensus

Brother Bear is gentle and pleasant if unremarkable Disney fare, with so-so animation and generic plotting.

Disney hides the morality tale behind a rip-roaring soundtrack, goofy moose sidekicks and enough bear slapstick to delight any child. Go to Full Review

While the animation itself (from the same team as Mulan) is charming and at times beautiful, the script is banal and uninspired. Go to Full Review

While the film can definitely be annoying in its comedy and have some misses such as the soundtrack, the emotional core of the film is still wildly strong with a moving and mature conversation that is honestly one of Disney's best. Go to Full Review

A succession of sequences already seen many times before that turn the film into a predictable trance. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Rough rule of thumb: the more an animated movie drones on about the Great Spirit, the less likely it is to have any great spirit. Go to Full Review

Maxwell B @RT98374151 1d Watched this as a boy and it profoundly moved me. As a younger brother, and a huge fan of Phil Collins (from his work on the Tarzan soundtrack, to name only one of his Grammy-nominated effrots), this movie is delightful and inspired. The story was tragic bit has a great moral arc, and the animation is beautiful. In sum, it's a classic family-friendly film. I will be showing it to my kids one day. See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom 2d Brother Bear has some genuinely beautiful animation. The landscapes are warm, detailed, and full of life, and the transformation scenes are handled with real visual care. Unfortunately, all that polish is wasted on a story that feels weak, rushed, and emotionally uneven. The movie wants to be heartfelt, but too much of it feels predictable and forced, so the emotional moments never hit as hard as they should. The pacing is another big problem. Important character development gets brushed aside, and the film seems more interested in getting from one scene to the next than in making the journey feel meaningful. Even with a strong visual style and a decent soundtrack, the script just does not support the animation well enough. It is a shame, because Brother Bear clearly had a lot of talent behind it. But good animation alone cannot save a movie that is executed this poorly. For me, it is a 3/10. See more El C @RT00400990 Apr 15 This film is undoubtedly beautiful, and the experience of re-watching it years after my childhood remains enriching—and continues to be so to this day. However, the one caveat I have and the reason why the movie might not fully win over everyone is that it feels minimalist on more than one occasion. The narrative development focuses primarily on Kenai, Koda, and Denahi, leaving aside other characters who could have had a chance to shine more brightly. Yet, the film compensates for this through its message, its raw emotional honesty, and its powerful themes specifically forgiveness and the necessity of facing the consequences of vengeance. I love how the film, despite its primary flaw, portrays these themes with such intelligence; the songs are superb especially the one during the credits. Bravo, Phil Collins you absolutely knocked it out of the park with "Look Through My Eyes." See more Sarah S. @Braxton188 Mar 17 THE REAL BEARS WERE MAN! See more Julia C. @sweetpotato Feb 15 This is an absolutely beautiful very sentimental movie. I don’t know why it’s not considered a classic. This is an amazing movie and I highly recommend it. It’s better than most movies that have come out since. See more Trafalgar L @TDWaterLaw93 Feb 7 Not even Phil Collins can save this movie. Joaquin Phoenix is good as Kenai, but I can’t stand Koda! It’s like Mushu but ten times worse. Not a film I would recommend, a generic plot and forgettable characters. Rut and Tuke should have gotten their own film, because at least they are hilarious. Everyone else is so forgettable. See more Read all reviews
