The film does nothing to beat against the current. There's no lesson that all this 1920s extravagance is problematic. Baz Luhrmann embraces excess without restraint: everything is loud, shiny, fast, and overwhelming. It can be tiring, but as the film moves forward, it slowly finds its own rhythm and begins to work on its own terms. This is not a classic adaptation of Fitzgerald, but a pop-infused reinterpretation where spectacle often threatens to swallow the drama. Still, there are moments when the film slows down and lets the characters breathe, and that’s where it gains emotional weight. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a strong performance, portraying Gatsby as vulnerable and obsessive without overstatement, while Joel Edgerton provides a grounded counterbalance to the visual excess. The biggest issue is Luhrmann’s inability to stop pushing: constant visual flourishes, anachronistic music, and hyperactive editing dilute some of the dramatic impact.
