Critics Consensus

Bleak, haunting, and yet still somehow hopeful, Winter's Bone is writer-director Debra Granik's best work yet -- and it boasts an incredible, starmaking performance from Jennifer Lawrence.

A rewarding, richly detailed exploration of the strength of character required when confronted by ugly truths.

The Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou? was the last film to make such delirious use of mountain music. The rest of the world can start drooling over Lawrence. I'm gonna git me a copy of that soundtrack.

The film, adapted by director Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini from the novel by Daniel Woodrell, establishes a formidable tension between mystery and matter-of-factness.

Granik and Lawrence paint a gray world in which the patriarchy is indifferent at best and actively hostile at worst to women’s aspirations and stories.

What makes “Winter’s Bone” a revelation is not necessarily the story itself but the tonal and atmospheric understanding of this world that the cast and crew bring.

This is an engrossing film, one about the different ways in which people react to impossible situations. And without becoming hackneyed or corny, the story offers a moving solution when it could have so easily fallen into a trap of hopelessness.

Strange that I came across this movie only now, 16 years after it came out. Well, it's a weary story about family ties and feuds, tending into extreme violence without ever showing it. It's all hidden from view, talked about, but never shown, though permanently present as the whole family apparently is involved in crime, from meth labs to hell knows what. I never cared for Jennifer Lawrence, but in this movie, age 19 playing a 17 year old teenager, she is quite surprising. The movie, in its whole doesn't say much, but at least it makes on think. At least about how some folks can live in conditions like these. Not very impressive, but also not a complete waste of time. 4/10 points.

Bleak and so slooooow. Not sure how that was nominated for four Oscars. Lawrence was good but not sure how this was rated so high.
