For Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), life is good. He is on the rise at his New York law firm, is happily married to his wife, Beth (Anne Archer), and has a loving daughter. But, after a casual fling with a sultry book editor named Alex (Glenn Close), everything changes. Jilted by Dan, Alex becomes unstable, her behavior escalating from aggressive pursuit to obsessive stalking. Dan realizes that his main problem is not hiding his affair, but rather saving himself and his family.

This is a horror film based on the sanctity of the family -- the dream family. It enforces conventional morality (in the era of AIDS) by piling on paranoiac fear. The family that kills together stays together, and the audience is hyped up.

Seen from a slightly removed perspective, the film becomes a stylized variation on conservative AIDS panic and a provocation to conservative heteronormativity. It has to be said that not all of the film has aged well.

SPOILER: It's crazy to me that the husband cheats on his wife multiple times and there is no remorse. Only because the woman happens to have a mental illness there are repercussions for him. In the end his wife is mad at him for a bit, but finally just kills the woman that clearly needs medical attention and the wife lives happily ever after with her unfaithful husband that had zero character development. The acting is pretty good and overall it also has a compelling plot line, but the framing of the characters is just off.

Glenn Close is scary and harrowing in this legal/romance thriller. With Anne Archer and Michael Douglas also giving great performances. Just sad how Glenn Close never won an Oscar for this. As she truly was the Best Actress of 1987.

"Fatal Attraction" is a good movie that seeks to warn men of the ill effects of adultery particularly men who wants to sleep around. Also, it presents the fact that one-night stands can present traumas in more unexpected ways particularly the peace within the family.
