nick S @Nick_S Sep 19, 2026 Great acting but that's all there is. This is a character study so if you're waiting for a plot to turn up don't hold your breath. And if the internal philosophical rambling of a low educated jerk doesn't appeal, you might not enjoy the character study either. See more Paul T @zuiderzee Aug 24, 2026 It captured me initally, but the lead character is annoying and unbelievable. I think that back in the early 90s there was a fetishisation of northern psudo intellectual working class blokes, as if they held the answer. I quit about 1/3 of the way through as it was just too annoying. See more Landon J @Minxsykitty Jul 25, 2026 Didn't like this. I don't believe it properly explores the ideas it sets up nor does it try to make sense of the insights it tries to provide. Overall it was kinda uninteresting, even though the protag is meant to be the opposite. See more Bob P @RT21361613 Jun 4, 2026 Dreadful. A waste of the hour that I endured it for. Pointless, seedy and empty. An Emperors new clothes of a film. I just found Thewlis annoying and completely unbelievable. See more John M. @RT83122340 Apr 29, 2026 This is the movie that changed everything for me. I used to only watch action hero and blockbuster films and then I saw this film randomly at a film club and it blew me away. I never realized that a film that wasn't a documentary could be so realistic and have a depth where you feel you are there with the actors. The realism in every single character. Even the fleeting ones like Maggie and Archie - people I have met in real life who are just like that - just made me realize the true power of cinema and I've never watched films the same way since - in the best possible way. So I had to find out how Mike gets such a depth of realism with the actors and dialogue and seeing his process and how he does it made it even more amazing. For this reason I think this will always be my favourite ever film. The fact that David Thewlis and Katrin as well have my two favourite ever performances in the same film. Just blows my mind even now all these years later.
