What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not rank with Scorsese's best work, but Shutter Island's gleefully unapologetic genre thrills represent the director at his most unrestrained.

It's supposed to be some suspense thriller... somebody should have said hey why don't you go see the hilarious comedy of Shutter Island. Go to Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Aug 30, 2018
It's not a serious film and it's not even an especially suspenseful film but it is fun, in a Dr Caligari sort of way. Go to Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Sep 11, 2017

A twisted psychological thriller that leaves you guessing until the very end, Shutter Island is yet another fantastic collaboration between DiCaprio (giving another pitch-perfect and near heartbreaking performance) and director Martin Scorsese. FUYU T @fiyuyu 1 day ago Pretty underwhelming, and not particularly suspenseful at all. A bit of an obvious conclusion that ended quickly. Concept is pretty much a rip-off of A Beautiful Mind. It’s hard to follow at times, due to the ambiguity of the storytelling, however its deep mystery and engaging symbolic imagery keeps you engaged. See more Julien M @jmontmayeur7 Sep 8, 2026 Honestly really surprised by how low this is rated on here. This is a great psychological thriller. It shoes what prisons and mental institutes are like and the plot twist is very good. I think maybe the plot could be paced a little better and we could get maybe more detail into Teddy's background. The scenes between Teddy and his wife are confusing and don't actually give us too much more information about him and his wife's relationship. We really don't learn much about Teddy till the plot twist at the end. See more Read all reviews
