Critics Consensus

Though the costumes are beautiful and the art direction impeccable, what stands out most from this debut by fashion designer Tom Ford is the leading performance by Colin Firth.

This is an impressive debut from which I am still reeling a little, and Firth's performance is astounding.

This is an important homosexual film based on a first-rate novel with a first-rate cast and probably a harbinger of similar movies to come. Many viewers will be disappointed that the movie only hints at intimacy rather than showcasing it.

Visually arresting and incredibly moving, the now 14-year-old Single is still quite simply one of the best movies of the 21st century so far.

In addition to being one of the greatest American designers of the last century, Tom Ford is also, it turns out, an incredible film director.

Such an underrated movie. The cinematography, sense of time and place, and Colin and Julianne Moore's performance were beautiful. A real sleeper if you come across it.

I picked this because it was not too long. It was mesmorising. I just suffered a loss so maybe that was why it resonanted so much. But I truly would recommend watching this film. Beautifully captured.

A beautiful, tender film, "The Necessity of Seeing!" Spirituality is woven into the story, as the soul of one character comes to another with love. Beautiful, delicate, romantic, and wise. A fantastic film that I only saw in 2026, on the recommendation of the great actor Hudson Williams.

I had such a wonderful experience. Cinematically this movie is so great that no wonder it was directed by Tom Ford. Whoever worked on the sound did such a great job, sonically this movie is a masterpiece, from the soundtrack to the noises in the movie, incredible. Overall this is a very quotable drama movie with perfectly curated dialogues and remarkable acting. I was so surprised to find out that I never saw it but I’m so glad I did.
