On Sept. 11, 2012, Islamic militants attack the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and Sean Smith, an officer for the Foreign Service. Stationed less than one mile away are members (James Badge Dale, John Krasinski, Max Martini) of the Annex Security Team, former soldiers assigned to protect operatives and diplomats in the city. As the assault rages on, the six men engage the combatants in a fierce firefight to save the lives of the remaining Americans.

Critics Consensus

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is a comparatively mature and restrained effort from Michael Bay, albeit one that can't quite boast the impact its fact-based story deserves.

The emotional component is cheapened, at least partially, inserting a level of bad taste into the proceedings I found difficult to get past.

Makes American Sniper look positively pacifist by comparison.

Punishingly paced, flimsily constructed, and tackily executed, with the subtlety and panache of a third-rate 1930s melodrama.

An offense to good taste and good war cinema, '13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi' is a shameless exploitation of recent history.

13 Hours is proof that if Michael Bay wants to take something seriously, he does have the skill to do so.

Michael Bay's film cannot help itself from taking brotherhood-fueled sides and blow everything up.

Such a great and true story. One of my favorite military movies. One critic talks about how they would like to see the movie show how the contractors juggled their jobs and family…SUCH A STUPID IDEA. The movie is about the tense fight going on during this situation, it doesn’t need some stupid family drama playing out to take away from the story of what happened. Completely miss the point of the movie. Not every movie needs some sappy story to go with it. Just dumb on the critic.

9/10 movie in my opinion, great story, great action, and great effects and characters. Only thing they could improve on is some plot holes.

Excellent depiction of the horrifying abandonment of many courageous and dedicated Americans. Cinema quality, special effects, use of color, all first rate.

While the movie took some time to develop the plot, the action and emotion that followed made it well worth it.
