Critics Consensus

Hard-hitting, immersive, and an impressive technical achievement, 1917 captures the trench warfare of World War I with raw, startling immediacy.

As a genre piece, I think it's really interesting -- well made and immersive. But as a kind of emotional movie that really pulled me in, I don't know if it did that.

The film dazzles at each step, one encounter and adventure after another shot like a set piece, complete in itself with MacKay's stoic presence adding to the pathos and poignancy.

...whatever its flaws, and the roll-call of big-name British actors sometimes works against the realism of the film rather than for it, 1917 does emerge as a great war movie on the scale of All Quiet on the Western Front or The Longest Day...

Mendes’ film — based in part on an account told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather, Alfred Mendes — provides a haunting glimpse at humanity’s seemingly incurable recklessness.

By concentrating so closely on the innermost experiences of just one or two men, he [Mendes] gives the film a fierceness and pathos it would have lacked if its perspective had been broader.

Well, the directing, cinematography, production design, and music definitely deserve their nominations! However, this wouldn't be my pick for best picture of the year. All in all, glad I saw it, but wouldn't see it again.
