In the small town of Riverton, a local legend tells of a serial killer's oath to come back and kill the seven children who were born on the night he supposedly died. Now 16 years later, Riverton residents are disappearing again, making some wonder if the legend is true. Bug (Max Thieriot), plagued by nightmares all his life, is one of the so-called Riverton Seven, and it's up to him to save his friends from an evil that will not rest.

Critics Consensus

Dull, joyless, and formulaic, My Soul to Take suggests writer/director Wes Craven ended his five-year filmmaking hiatus too soon.

The filmmaker's red herrings prove depressingly incapable of hiding the real fiend's identity.

There's some malarkey about each kid having inherited one of the maniac's personalities, though Craven never does much with that except to point the finger of suspicion at junior.

This utterly mediocre forget-me-now could've been crafted by any faceless serial director at all.

Wes Craven undeniably earned his legacy in horror, though maybe he should have abandoned his penchant for delivering stories about teens with his Scream sequels.

As the second last film in one of the great contemporary horror filmmaker’s careers, it’s an extraordinary example of artistic self-reflection and development.

Good synopsis from the start, but a lot of it didn’t make sense and the ending didn’t really answer any questions.

Again with the 3D, I guess the director just gave up on this movie? Filled with jump scares, a terrible twist, and poorly written characters.
