Critics Consensus

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master marks a relative high point in this franchise's bumpy creative journey, although the original remains far superior.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" is by far the best of the series, a superior horror picture that balances wit and gore with imagination and intelligence. Go to Full Review

Surprisingly watchable for the third sequel and despite its general predictability it's entertainingly inventive. Go to Full Review

The horror elements have been softened, and the humour increased: while the result is a more mainstream entertainment it does feel like something more potent has been lost in return. Go to Full Review

The embrace of inherent absurdity might have worked for the last installment, but it doesn't work here, as it doubles down on anything even remotely horrific in the promising franchise. Go to Full Review

Marlin puts a fresh spin on the recurring nightmare cliché and there's a marvellous scene where Wilcox is flung into the on-screen action from a cinema balcony. Go to Full Review

Shadow R @GeminiShadowRealm 1 day ago The Dream Master leans hard into late-80s horror-comedy territory, shifting the franchise away from pure suspense toward a more stylized, pop-culture-heavy funhouse. The story picks up with Kristen (now played by Tuesday Knight), who summons her old psychiatric hospital peers into her dreams and introduces them to her new friends, including Alice and her athletic friend Debby. After Freddy Krueger resurrects himself, he systematically eliminates Kristen and the other kids, leaving Alice to step into her destiny as the "Dream Master" to take Freddy on in a final showdown. This installment ramps up the humor significantly, with Robert Englund delivering plenty of over-the-top, wise-cracking one-liners and elaborate, surreal kills like Debby's gym-inspired demise that abandon gritty realism for dark fantasy effects. However, the cast and performances feel a bit flat, making it harder to truly root for them. See more Benjamin W @Code70 Oct 6, 2026 This one is interesting. I didn’t hate it, I don’t think it’s terrible or even bad, but a few key things hold it back quite a bit. As for the positives, it’s a solidly entertaining entry. Not as engaging as the first or third films, but it’s fun. You get a more comedic Krueger here (for better or worse), it does a lot of crazy, unique things and the effects once again are great. But it’s pretty disrespectful in how it treats the survivors from Dream Warriors. Killing all of them off in the first act of the film? Ruins the victory they had in that third one (a film many, many people love mind you, and is certainly far better than this one). Why do horror sequels do that? I also didn’t really find Alice that interesting, and while the more comedic Krueger is charming at times, it definitely doesn’t work as well as the mix in the first and third film. And also, at this point, I am starting to feel diminishing returns. It’s…OK. Not terrible, but certainly not great or anything. See more Julian C @juliancooper_12 Sep 29, 2026 This sequel does so many things wrong that many fans of the franchise will hate See more Jack L @RT67175345 Sep 20, 2026 Dream master is not the best but not the worst elm street film but is def a film that is rewatch able but wouldn’t be my first pick See more Ollie W @RT90619198 Sep 1, 2026 The dialogue is atrocious, most of the acting is bad. The actor Andras Jones, playing the Rick Johnson character, is particularly bad and ruined the film. Some ok kills but it is a juvenile childish film for babies. There isn’t a great explanation for why Freddy is back after dying in the third film. Some girl gains all these dream powers, which is a major part of the storyline, and yet when she’s up against Freddy it doesn’t even matter. She punches him a whole bunch but he’s unaffected and just laughs. What can actually defeat him is a mirror? What’s even the point of having the powers then? A dumb ending. The only good points: Some good pop songs on the soundtrack. And Danny Hassel who plays Dan Jordan is very attractive. As in the Dream Warriors, Freddy Krueger is presented as a cheesy comedian and therefore the film isn’t scary. Hard to believe that, adjusted for inflation, this is the second best performing Nightmare film at the box office, after Freddy vs Jason.
