Amazingly, this is Ryan's first lead role in a feature film, and although the sparse Abundant Acreage doesn't always rise to her level, her understated but powerful performance brings the story to life - even in the dead of winter.

The director elects ... to back away from the story's edgier, more unnerving possibilities in favor of something altogether more soggy and formless.

Cinematographer Andrew Reed captures the harsh beauty of post-harvest winter in sharp relief: crunchy stalks left in the field, the sky a crystalline blue.

MacLachlan has a way of reducing his characters and, by his extension, viewers to children, as a way to keenly elicit our empathies, but at the risk of having his film feel too rudimentary.

...possesses an endearing lead performance from Amy Ryan, but is too plodding, loquacious and overladen with themes to allow her excellent performance to breathe.

A-

It might seem deceptively simple and straightforward, but this is a film with great depths that demands attentive rewatches.

Exceptionally well-written screenplay with realistic dialog wonderfully delivered by the veteran cast. It's refreshing to see a movie with an original story not trying so hard to drag the audience around the plot on a leash. Thinking about what made the story seem original to me, I recognized the twist on "a stranger comes to town" which sets the plot in motion after a highly emotional and touching opening. This story would have worked as well as a stage play, but the directing and scenery added so much to the sense of place which turns out to be the primary symbol hiding in plain sight. I highly recommend this film for a literate audience.

imho... ryans performance was noteworthy but the rest of the cast seemed to be bumbling through.... the moments that were supposed to be poignant were not. .. a yawner.
