Animals is indeed a curious beast, a familiar thriller that poorly cribs from the classic Kurosawa film “High and Low” and feels stuck in its larval stage.

A mixed bag. It’s far from Affleck’s best work, but there are glimmers of his muscularity and sharpness, as both filmmaker and actor.

For every piece of drone footage sweeping across LA, every shot that carves out about two feet of space between actors with no sizzle, I kept wishing for more Gillian Anderson, more Gillian Anderson, please.

Affleck wants to explore what happens when honorable people discover that the world demands indecent things of them, but the drama rarely earns the gravity it assigns to those quandaries.

Not sure why the reviews are so bad. Dark, gritty, intense. The kind of off-kilter romance involving the reality of a long term marriage. Goodness of heart. Suspicion of everyone. No cheese. No plotholes. Crisis reveals character, and I like what I saw.

I guess I wasn't in the mood to watch Ben's Spanish lesson. How did this even get made? I felt like they just took parts from Inside Man, Man on Fire, and Don't Say a Word - all great movies, but not when sold for parts.

The acting in this movie was horrendous. The performances by Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington were tired and seemed almost like they were reading from a script during filming. The plot was was slow as molasses. The dialog was poorly written and contrived. I would strongly recommend that you don't waste your time with this movie.
