Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum’s teen coming of age fantasy film Aquamarine (2006) still delights me. I had not seen this movie in over a decade and it remains a very cute and easy watch. It’s a perfect viewing experience for families. Aquamarine is like Blue Crush or The Princess Diaries for that upbeat and happy kids movie. I do have nostalgia for seeing this when I was a young kid. It’s so nice to Emma Roberts, JoJo, and Sara Paxton all together here in Aquamarine. Rosenbaum’s direction is very playful with plenty of good natured humor for the comedy, sweet moments of romance, and tender scenes of female friendship. The water scenes look so fabulous. The clothes shopping at the mall made me nostalgic. All the sea puns and mermaid references are fun. It’s a fantastic movie based on Alice Hoffman’s novel and adapted with care by John Quaintance and Jessica Bendinger. Aquamarine will always be a cute and lovable movie to me. Emma Roberts is adorable, funny, and moving as Claire Brown, who is shy and afraid of the water because her parents drowned. Roberts was already a fantastic actress. It’s so cute seeing her again having so much fun in Aquamarine. Joanna "JoJo" Levesque is amazing as the young heroine Hailey Rogers. I cared that she did not want to move, but also when she grows up and realizes she should support her mom in the end. Sara Paxton is beautiful, sweet, and playful as the lovely mermaid Aquamarine, who comes to the shore to be human for three days. Jake McDorman is handsome, kind, and fun as the lifeguard Raymond, who all the girls like. Arielle Kebbel is super mean and insane as the bully Cecilia Banks. Bruce Spence is great as the nice janitor Leonard, who is simply lonely. Cinematographer Brian J. Breheny’s vibrant close-up and medium shots look compelling, while the wide shots of the waves look spectacular. Aquamarine is well shot and creative to the mermaid shots to hide effects. Editor Jane Moran cuts Aquamarine together with a smooth cutting and brisk pace. The vivid lighting by Matt Slattery looks so bright and cinematic compared to the dreary films of today. Composer David Hirschfelder’s gorgeous film score is so bright and delicate. His music sounds so lovely. Costume designer Sally Sharpe’s blue outfits are all so cute.
