Critics Consensus

A warm, thoughtful dramedy about male insecurity, Beautiful Girls is buoyed by an excellent cast - particularly Natalie Portman in a stunning early role.

Beautiful Girls would have us believe being a guy is hard, confusing, nay, downright torturous.

This film really succeeds with its warm treatment of ordinary hang-ups -- no life-shattering revelations or pain repressed since childhood, just the genuine, everyday trials of life.

Consistently smart and funny — sharply written and well-acted, with an authentic Bay State fatalism underlying every scene.

Beautiful Girls feels like a song you loved at twenty that somehow sounds sadder and better at forty. Timothy Hutton and this beautifully messy ensemble capture that strange crossroads where old friendships, old dreams, and new doubts all collide. Funny, tender, and a little bruised, it’s a movie about growing up without ever quite feeling grown up.

Beautiful Girls is another great comedy-romantic film from the 90s. It has a relaxed, thoughtful feel that makes it easy to get into, and it captures small-town life in a way that feels warm, honest, and memorable. What makes it work so well is the mix of humor and emotion. The dialogue feels natural, the characters are believable, and the movie has a charm that makes even the quieter moments enjoyable. It never feels forced or overly polished. There is also a nice sense of nostalgia running through the whole film, which gives it extra personality. It feels like the kind of movie that understands everyday life without trying too hard to impress. Overall, Beautiful Girls is a very enjoyable 90s romantic comedy with strong atmosphere and good heart. I’d give it an 8/10.

An insecure grown "man", who is engaged, develops a crush on a well under 18 year old girl. Gross.
