The idea of an unseen force that causes anyone who looks at it to immediately take their own life is genuinely unsettling, and forcing the characters to navigate the world blindfolded turns even ordinary tasks into tense, suspenseful set pieces. Director Susanne Bier wisely keeps the threat mostly unseen, allowing your imagination to do much of the work. The river journey, in particular, is incredibly nerve-racking. Sandra Bullock anchors the film with a strong performance, convincingly transforming Malorie from someone emotionally guarded into a fiercely protective mother. A few supporting characters don't receive enough development before the story moves on, but the atmosphere, suspense, and emotional core make Bird Box much more than another post-apocalyptic thriller.
