Is Blade Runner 2049 a masterpiece like its predecessor? Definitely not. It's not even a match for 2016's superb Arrival, the previous film from director Denis Villeneuve. Yet on its own terms, it's a dazzling achievement.

This kind of layered, slow-burn investigation/action hybrid desperately needs a screenplay that keeps you tense and on edge, making the audience sweat and feel the heat. Sadly, I never quite felt that intensity. Still a solid watch though! The VFX team went absolutely insane and earned that extra half star from me all by themselves.

"Blade Runner 2049" is a slow-moving, sophisticated, cinematic masterpiece. The story, cinematography, atmosphere, and direction are top-notch. Watching "Blade Runner 2049" was a greater experience the second time around.
