In Sarasota, Fla., circa 1974, an ambitious, 29-year-old reporter is relentlessly motivated to succeed. She knows she has talent, but being a driven career woman in the '70s comes with its own challenges, especially when competition for a promotion and a tumultuous home life lead to a dissolution of self. With ratings in the cellar, the station manager issues a mandate to deliver juicier and more exploitative stories, a story firmly at odds with her serious brand of issue-based journalism.

Critics Consensus

Rising on the strength of Rebecca Hall's gripping performance, Christine offers an empathetic look at its subject's public career and painful private life.

Campos' film is a clinging, yearning look at one woman's mad desire for acceptance.

A perfect exemplar of a bad good movie, Antonio Campos' Christine traps (an excellent) Rebecca Hall in a series of impeccably composed frames as the famously ill-fated Sarasota local news anchor Christine Chubbuck.

It's a haunting reflection on the hopefulness of feminism for the 1970s working woman, which is also uncomfortably effective. And while Christine's death is a part of the conclusion of the narrative, it doesn't define it.

It was far more compelling than I expected, and a definite evolution in Campos’ flexibility as a filmmaker; whatever its flaws, I never knew what would happen next, and that’s rare.

Subtly the film grows more unnerving with each step forward. Campos methodically puts together the pieces of this story, and it’s tough to endure knowing the tragic finale that lies ahead.

I don’t know how accurately this film portrays the details of this unfortunately true story but I do know it succeeded in portraying themes of alienation, self doubt and other mental health struggles. This is a film I don’t think I’ve ever thought so highly of while simultaneously knowing I’ll never watch again.

I gave up after 1:10. There isn't really a hook early in the movie or an ark or interesting things about the main character to latch on to.

Rebecca Hall is fantastic in this award-worthy performance. It's a haunting exploration of a person who is just desperate for connection and acceptance. It's a tragic tale that needed to be told.

There was absolutely no story and not much to the titular character in the first half. The story needed to be told for obvious reasons, and that became clear in the second half where the performance of the main character's downward spiral becomes more captivating. If someone went into this blind, I can see how they might not think much of it. She was basically an ordinary person doing an ordinary job in an ordinary life where nothing out of the ordinary happened, and this film was just about the same... until the ending.

Rebecca Hall is fantastic. I had no idea that this was biographical. It's an amazing movie where the story of Christine Chubbock feels like a personal loss. I also feel a little guilty because the character seemed slightly comical in her neuroticism and made me laugh a bit. But maybe that is okay.
