Perseus (Harry Hamlin), son of the Greek god Zeus (Laurence Olivier), grows up on a deserted island. His destiny is to marry Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker), who will someday rule the city of Joppa. But as long as the satyr Calibos (Neil McCarthy) -- who uses a giant vulture to kidnap Andromeda's soul every night -- is alive, no one can marry her. Perseus travels to Joppa, where he must defeat Calibos and other mythological monsters to rescue Andromeda.

Critics Consensus

A goofy, old-school sword-and-sandal epic, Clash of the Titans mines Greek mythology for its story and fleshes it out with Ray Harryhausen's charmingly archaic stop-motion animation techniques.

Clash groans and makes you wonder why you didn't stay home and watch television.

Some of Mr. Harryhausen's creatures are breathtaking: others are botch-ups.

The cast is generally good, though some of the veterans do take a rather casual, tongue-in-cheek approach to their larger-than-life status.

Utterly lacking in suspense, predictable as inflation, and with an appearance that seems a good 20 years out of date, Clash of the Titans is a tribute to the promotional arts.

Its escapist nature makes it perfect summer fare, and its fine overall production quality make it a worthy entry.

Clash of the Titans was shot in England, Spain, Italy, and Malta, and the location photography fairly well reflects the atmosphere of the picture, which will probably do very well at the box office despite its artistic limitations.

I know Clash of the Titans is a favorite for many of my generation, but I’m not certain if I have watched it from start to finish until today. I know I’ve seen parts of it many times, though. It’s funny how, even though the obvious stop-motion animation is dated now, it’s still really impressive. Ray Harryhausen knew what he was doing. It was also interesting that instead of leaning away from the visual effects, since they required so much work, they lean into it and showcase extended stop-motion sequences. I can’t say that I loved Clash of the Titans, but I can say that I understand why so many do.

One of the best movies i have ever seen. Great story and hot actors. Greek myth should have more movies. Hamlin should havebeen a jedi knight. Judi Bowker smoking hot and one of prettiest actresses ever. Both should havebeen in way more movies.

I had the toys, I had the comic adaptation - I loved and was scared of this movie. Medusa was awesome, I think I liked her "original" death which was depicted in the comics. Andromeda was gorgeous and Perseus became a lawyer. Such a fun movie. I was lucky to be born in the mid 70s.
