Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, Crime 101 weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices--and the realization that there can be no turning back. Adapted from Don Winslow's acclaimed novella of the same name, the film is written and directed by Bart Layton (American Animals, The Imposter). Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte round out the cast.

It’s much better than it has any right to be. You’ve already seen Heat a thousand times. You can take one night off and watch this instead. Go to Full Review

It’s pacy and slick. And as you would hope from a film that makes a point of namechecking the Steve McQueen car chase classic Bullitt, the asphalt of LA’s downtown highways takes some serious punishment. Go to Full Review

A cut above the usual heist-thriller and featuring Mark Ruffalo's Columbo-like performance, "Crime 101" makes you wish all neo-noirs were this captivating. Go to Full Review

Layton and crew tie things up neatly, but the ending is where the movie is least compelling. The gems in “Crime 101” are stashed along the road. Go to Full Review

Writer-director Layton takes an engaging bunch of characters and does very little with them. It’s entirely watchable, but you’ll likely have forgotten it by the summer. Go to Full Review

The movie takes its time moving the pieces and the plot to its satisfying conclusion. A great date movie with lots to talk about. See more Read all reviews
