Jay W @RT52162311 3d This film feels like it is trolling the audience. Like they are deliberately toying with expectations and going a different direction with it. Giving this film its due respect, it is a terrific love letter to 1970's grindhouse films. The film stock, the editing, the references and the soundtrack are all lovingly utilized. And it has the BEST CAR CHASE I have ever seen. With that being said, the movie intentionally wastes a lot of time before getting there. There are some all-time great moments in the middle, and the final 20 minutes. But the film wants to mess with you a bit first. The first half takes its time, maybe a little too much, with long conversations that feel like they're daring you to be patient. But once the engines start roaring, the movie turns into a thrilling love letter to old-school stunt work and exploitation cinema. What really makes Death Proof stand out is its commitment to doing things for real. No endless CGI spectacle, no impossible physics, just cars, speed, danger, and some of the most impressive practical stunts ever put on screen. The final chase sequence alone is worth the price of admission. Kurt Russell is fantastic as the creepy and charismatic Stuntman Mike, but the real stars are the women who refuse to play the role of victims. When the tables turn, the movie becomes pure cinematic adrenaline. Messy? Sometimes. Overlong? Maybe. Entertaining? Absolutely. This is Tarantino with the pedal to the floor. Thankfully the last 20 or so minutes of this are really good, cause the majority of this was displeasing me, I'll just say I'm glad Tarantino spent most of his career primarily writing men. Has a really funny depiction of Lebanon, TN as this area with wide valleys, rolling mountains, and even a couple oil derricks for good measure.
