Filmmaker Amy Berg documents the case of convicted pedophile Oliver Grady who, as a priest in northern California, molested the children of his parishioners, apparently with the knowledge of his superiors in the diocese. Berg tracks down O'Grady in Ireland, where he lives free under church protection, and allows him to give his own account of his crimes.

Critics Consensus

Deliver Us From Evil is a superb documentary and a searing look at an institution protecting its leaders at the expense of its followers. A profoundly disturbing chronicle of a wolf in sheep's clothing, the film builds a clear-eyed case against pedophile priest Oliver O'Grady, and the Catholic bureaucracy that protected him. The recollections of O'Grady's victims are nothing short of shocking and heartbreaking.

The polemical is never as powerful as the personal and O'Grady's part of the story illuminates the whole with nauseating clarity.

Deliver Us Evil is more terrifying than any horror movie, because it's about something that really happened.

Watching Amy Berg's powerful documentary Deliver Us from Evil is a wrenching experience; her subjects reveal to the camera almost unbearable levels of anguish, and its audience walks away feeling both numbness and rage.

The film is painful viewing, in large part because director Amy Berg relates the facts and depicts the victims and the culprits with detached gravity.

Berg's intuitively right ratio of personal and analytical material, her implied belief in transcendence of horrific demoralization, shows a truly progressive vision.

This rough-hewn but well-meaning Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature uncloaking the penumbra of clergy sexual and spiritual abuse of children in the Catholic Church is utterly disconcerting and exasperatedly aggravating as the conceitedness of the vile pedophile former priest Oliver O'Grady in his alleged confessions.

Phenomenal exposé on the insidiousness of the Catholic Church specifically, and a broader indictment of the institution of religion.

A cut and dry case against the church and its priests re pedophilia. The part that bothers me the most is how strongly the church advocates against gay people and gay relationships but are ok with priests molesting young boys. This is a pressing issue and as long as it continues, a spotlight should be cast upon it. Why would it stop though? None of the priests are held accountable for their actions.
