In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

Dunkirk is a the best directed film of the year and perhaps Christopher Nolan’s best film yet. The way he plays with space and time, alongside his technical prowess of sensory storytelling, makes the film so immersive in supplanting you into these events.

As technically proficient and respectful to history as Dunkirk is, no substantial human anchors of emotion emerge in this film that wants to be seen as an inspiring rescue saga before a war film or historical epic.

A wall of sound creating a mounting sense of dread for the men who found themselves surprised and cutoff by a relentless enemy. An imperfect film but one that uses sound design and editing with precision to create a sense of ever rising anxiety and dread. In that most crucial sense, I think the film accomplishes its mission at creating an authentic set of feelings for the audience while still honoring the memory of the men who experienced this battle firsthand.

Saw it and not really that interested in seeing it again. Nolan, who usually can turn scenes without dialogue into works of art, definitely stumbles here in Dunkirk. The atmosphere at some parts is very convincing, with good use of practical effects.
