Critics Consensus

It may lack the absurd humor that underlined the original, but the new-look Evil Dead compensates with brutal terror, gory scares, and gleefully bloody violence.

The current reboot feels uncreative. Watching the new film just made me miss Bruce Campbell's chin and shots of Raimi running insane through the woods.

Using the very latest Cern-tested atom interferometry, we can reveal that Evil Dead is precisely, exactly - in the coldest atomic terms -the film that you were expecting.

Happy days for those who love this sort of thing. But Raimi's effort, perhaps because we hadn't seen the plot before, was infinitely more scary.

[Evil Dead] is exactly the kind of goopy, gory goodness any horror affiliate is hunting for.

... barely musters interest because it fails to do anything remarkable with the opportunity. It borrows on nostalgia by gathering similar characters at a familiar location wherein unsightly, horrible things happen to them, yet pushes things not at all.

Fede Alvarez, has a rare misfire as he makes changes and retains elements that are not faithful to the spirit of the original and prioritizes surprises over relatable character development and dynamics.

This movie is bananas! Gory , nasty, brutal, and unrelenting. Amazing practical effects and kills! People complain cause the tone is different but this is its own thing! Must watxh.

Wrote, shot, and framed like a classic horror movie with many references to the originals, yet dives off the deep end with the blood and gore. I think it is a insane ride with the ending capitalizing on story well.

A plodding remake with dull characters. The violence becomes numbing when there is no interest in the characters. Mediocre.

All of you who are saying this movie even compared with anything in the franchise are a bunch of losers. The only thing this "movie" had was gore and stupidity. Hollywood junk! There was no climactic verge that the character overcame except some throw back scene with a chainsaw. No witty commentary that made the movies entertaining. Just put it in the machine and turn out something for Netflix and make a "few" bucks. Lame duck losers. Disappointed is an understatement.

Reminds me of when they remade The Fog. Just full of bad writing and worse characters in comparison to the original. Some good scares and updated gore but not much else.
