Critics Consensus

Four Rooms comes stocked with a ton of talent on both sides of the camera, yet only manages to add up to a particularly uneven -- and dismayingly uninspired -- anthology effort.

No one at all seems to have directed Tim Roth who, as the bellhop linking the segments, tries to do a Jerry Lewis and ends up with a twitching, mugging, achingly unfunny performance that he will come to regard as an embarrassment. Go to Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Mar 13, 2007
The results are mainly awful, and even Roth got saddled with a mannered part that he can't comfortably play. Go to Full Review Emanuel Levy Variety Dec 28, 2006

Four of the hottest indie directors--Anders, Rockwell, Tarantino, and Rodrigues--miss a unique opportunity to display their idiosyncratic talents resulting in a tedious anthology in which 2 segments are inept, one barely decent, and one OK (guess whose) Go to Full Review Mal Vincent The Virginian-Pilot Mar 1, 2022

It's questionable which got the worst of the bargain. In any case, this is one of the more interesting disasters of the waning film year. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Dec 18, 2019

The weakest entries are absolutely dreadful. Go to Full Review Tim Stevens The Spool Jul 17, 2019
On the one hand, TIm Roth gives the bellhop an almost Charlie Chaplin silent film feel. The impish looks, the exaggerated shock takes, the way he bounces in place or struts behind his room service cart. On the other hand, he has lines. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Phillip I @RT33335145 Oct 7, 2026 Four rooms is a super weird, crazy, and an overall decent film, and sure the first 2 parts of the movie aren't the greatest and are somewhat boring, the rest of the film is funny, dark and very entertaining. Tim roth as Ted gives off a very comedic, looney tunes style of acting to this role, and its just what the film needs. Another great part of the film is the killer soundtrack by combustible edison. In the end, Four rooms is definitely an underrated film. See more B P @Bradster69 Oct 3, 2026 Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Simon H @RT24582226 Sep 19, 2026 I know not why this didn't do well. I remember watching it on video in 1996. I have watched it several times since and even purchased it on DVD. It's great comedy and Tim Roth is as always excellent. Very much like Looney Tunes over the top slap stick comedy. See more James R @RT72233284 Jun 9, 2026 Movie is excellent. Like when QT and Rodriguez did The Grindhouse, the critics don’t get it. Flies over their heads. See more mark g @Mark_Alan_G. Jan 20, 2026 One of the most pretentious and awful movies ever made. Attempts to humourous but it is cringe bad. The QT cult pumping up ratings. See more Maksim S @MaksimusMovies Nov 2, 2025 Four Rooms may have been critically panned upon release, but it has since earned a devoted cult following — and for good reason. Tim Roth anchors the film as the hapless bellhop Ted, navigating four wildly bizarre stories over a single New Year’s Eve in a Los Angeles hotel: a Halloween-themed party gone wrong, a mobster’s mysterious demands, a devilish lovers’ quarrel, and a surreal finale involving a wedding. Roth’s performance can be cringe-inducing at times — his wimpy, over-the-top portrayal occasionally grates — yet his character is the perfect through-line connecting these absurd vignettes. The all-star ensemble cast and offbeat, unpredictable stories make the film oddly memorable, earning it a place on the top shelf of cult cinema. Despite its critical “flop” label, Four Rooms is anything but forgettable: a bizarre, funny, and strangely charming anthology that refuses to gather much dust. See more Read all reviews
