Years ago, Tommy Jarvis (Thom Mathews) killed infamous hockey-masked murderer Jason Voorhees (C.J. Graham), and the intensity of the experience has landed him in a mental institution. To end his torment and achieve a level of closure, Tommy escapes from the hospital and heads to the graveyard where Jason is buried, intending to dig up the body and cremate it. But, before this total annihilation can occur, a freak electrical accident resurrects Jason from the dead, and the terror begins anew.

Critics Consensus

Jason Lives thanks to an injection of self-aware humor and directorial flair from Tom McLoughlin, only to be struck down by the usual pattern of predictable Friday the 13th carnage.

The mayhem is so methodical there's no suspense of chills as such, only the appeal of formula.

In Jason Lives, the killings are rarely surprising or scary but the killings are graphically and sensationally disgusting.

A story of measurable frightening impact, peopled by honestly sympathetic characters with convincing motivations.

The reflexive humor is fun and there are some amusing gags, but the action is as gory as ever. Pretty sick stuff.

Jason has no sense of humor, but the screenplay does include a few in-jokes for fans. It's still a boring exercise because there's no suspense.

In Jason Lives, there's no brain and no pain. The moral? Nothing this profitable ever dies.

Where All the Megans At! This movie is so wacky and over the top, from the way Jason comes back to the paintball fight. Honestly, I feel like they could have skipped Part 5 and just made this one. I loved getting right to the point. There's no long setup. Jason is back and starts ending people. The James Bond opening wink was cute, and the violence is FINALLY here! The first 15 minutes had more tension and violence than all the previous movies. It still follows the formula with some random teen stuff, but I liked how this one played it out. It felt different enough from the previous movies while still feeling like Friday the 13th. I don't really understand how Tommy changed so much between Part 4 and this, but I guess it doesn't matter. It can be a little too tongue in cheek, but that's B movie horror. Some kills still cut away too quickly, which is frustrating. Overall, I honestly think this is the best one so far.
