Critics Consensus

It may not have been necessary to remake the 1985 cult classic, but the new Fright Night benefits from terrific performances by Colin Farrell and David Tennant -- and it's smart, funny, and stylishly gory to boot.

If Fright Night is meant to be a send-up of the genre it takes itself too seriously - I can't remember a single decent joke, now I think about it - and if it isn't a send-up then it doesn't take itself seriously enough.

The fun of this new Fright Night is in the nuances, the quirky character bits and the sly bits of intelligence that sparkle along the way.

Fright Night 3D qualifies as a successful entry in a tricky genre - blending flip humour and emotional intensity in a way that feels true after its fashion to the facts of teenage life.

...it’s not horrible, and it’s not great; if we rated it like my high school rated my work, it would get a passing grade, so 6 out of 10 seems fair here.

A successful horror comedy knows when to scare you and when to ease your fears with humor, and Gillespie effectively blends shocks and laughs.

“Fright Night” just isn’t scary at all. There are a couple of loud jump scares, but in terms of actual creepiness, nope.

I love the original Fright Night still, always have & always will.I knew a remake was gonna happen down the road eventually.I then saw this remake & thought,Hey,this thing aint so bad,I kinda dug it actually. It's got a great cast & everyone is great in their roles. It's a great example of how you do a remake right. You do things a little bit differently this time around, but just keep it just a little bit close to the original's design.A certain person's cameo is gonna put a big fat smile on everyone's faces.

I liked it, not much rewatchability. But for a one-time viewing, it’s an entertaining mix of comedy/gore/vampire stuff. Colin Farrells always great.
