Critics Consensus

Subtle to a fault, this perfectly cast ensemble drama is lifted by typically sharp performances from Robert Duvall and Bill Murray.

Get Low is a handmade kind of film. Its ambitions are modest, but fully attained. I rarely use the words ''go see it'', but I hope a lot of people do. Go to Full Review Robbie Collin News of the World Jan 24, 2011

Aaron Schneider's southern folk tale comes slathered in corn syrup, oozing its way towards a climax that's not so much big reveal as dying whimper. Go to Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times Aug 10, 2024

It’s moving and heartbreaking, but doesn’t deliver the smacked-upside-the-head-whammy the build-up suggests. After the final bit of information, we realize this movie is more of a “journey” and less than a “destination” type of story. Go to Full Review Michael Leader Den of Geek May 7, 2024

A sad, minor mystery lies at the heart of this whimsical, sometimes beautiful, yet underwhelming tale of folksy Americana. Go to Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Jul 19, 2022
Sincerity overcomes melodrama, and the movie is worthwhile. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Bill T @btreakle Jul 2, 2026 “Get Low” This film here is starring Robert Duvall and Bill Murray is another one of Robert defaul’s many performances that have not seen. Story about a man who wants to know what people really think about him but without giving too much away I’m gonna leave it at that. Sissy spacek also stars in this film and plays a very important role. I believe this film shows the diversity of not only Robert Duvall but also Bill Murray and Sissy spacek. It’s a lot of fun I think it’s one that you’ll enjoy and I highly recommend this film to all ages.   See more Greg A. @appletree Apr 1, 2026 Very well written and acted movie See more Rick R @RT01654519 Jan 28, 2026 well written, excelent acting, very interesting very entertaining held my attention See more Kim P @RT98672688 Sep 20, 2025 The cast provided top-notch portrayals of their characters. Duvall, Murray, Black, Spacek, McRaney, Cobb...all excellent in their telling of this unique story. See more Mike S @RT41902413 Aug 5, 2025 As everyone points out, this film has a superb cast. And the basic Faulkneresque idea that serves as a framework for the story is original and potentially rich with humor, drama and some very moving scenes. But the film has problems with pacing, character development, and dialog. And the story loses it's way in the 2nd half of the film and starts meandering. Bill Murray did a comendable job playing a character that doesn't quite know who he's supposed to be, a cynical, comic hustler or someone desperately in need of a little success. Ditto Bill Cobbs who does the best one could hope for playing a character who's so poorly thought out he ends up being superfluous to the story. I was left wondering if there were scenes relegated to the cutting room floor that could've helped helped flesh out the story and the characters. Overall a disappointment given the quality of the cast. See more Rita E @RT30678761 Sep 4, 2024 Excellent movie. Based on a true story. Excellent acting. Had me laughing and crying.
