Critics Consensus

Dark, intelligent, and stylish to a fault, Gone Girl plays to director David Fincher's sick strengths while bringing the best out of stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.

Gone Girl is the movie Flynn fans hoped for and sets Pike up for a worthy Oscar nomination but Fincher disappoints in failing to improve upon the already-brilliant book.

Gone Girl is a rather funhouse version of this fateful couple's relationship that teeters on depravity, desperation and bitter irony in its every step.

'Gone Girl' may come advertised as a thriller, but that's Fincher being a trickster-he's gone and made the curtest, nastiest, most acidic black comedy about the marital accord since 'The War of the Roses.'

David Fincher absolutely hits it out of the park. It's one of the best, and darkest, visions he's ever dished up.

To satiate your curiosity, the list of appropriate adjectives of what follows in the second and third acts would include twisted, dark, seething, shocking, disturbing, unsettling, rich, creepy, and engrossing. You’ll see.

I know this is a beloved film, but I just couldn’t connect with it. The story itself is genuinely interesting, and the performances are strong, but the pacing absolutely killed the experience for me. It felt slow, flat, and exhausting to get through to the point where I had to split the movie across several days. I can appreciate the writing and acting, but none of that mattered enough when the direction made the film feel this dull to me.

I just finished the book and decided to rewatch the movie. Great storyline, but it felt rushed. I wish they had made it a limited serious to give more details from the book and create more character depth.

Gone Girl is a dark, twisted psychological thriller that keeps you questioning almost everyone from beginning to end. David Fincher creates a cold, unsettling atmosphere, while the story constantly plays with your expectations. The movie’s biggest strength is how it explores marriage, media attention, manipulation, and how easily people can create a false image of themselves. The only downside is that it can feel a little slow in certain parts, but the tension and twists make up for it.

i watched after reading the book so i'm a bit biased. it was just ✨lackluster.✨ there was very little chemistry between anyone. it felt like everyone's first time ever being in a room together.
