Dr. Ryan Stone is a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission. Her commander is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky, helming his last flight before retirement. Then, during a routine space walk by the pair, disaster strikes: The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Ryan and Matt stranded in deep space with no link to Earth and no hope of rescue. Gravity shows us the beauty of space, how the silence can be an escape from all the noise experienced on earth, as well as, gravity being associated with space, water or the events that don't allow us to be free in life, from ourselves and others.

Gravity is a one-dimensional spectacle. Technically sleek but narratively weightless, it relies on visual wizardry to distract from a bare-bones story. The film opens with long, beautiful shots and an impressive sense of spatial immersion — then spends the next hour dragging out an extremely thin plot with endless close-ups of Sandra Bullock breathing. The setup is stronger than the payoff. Once the tension wears off, whats left is a hollow journey through increasingly implausible obstacles. It's not profound, it's not moving — it's just long.

Cuarón's Gravity announces itself in the opening sequence and never lets go. The transition in and out of Ryan Stone's helmet is the kind of directorial decision that reminds you what cinema is actually capable of, pulling the viewer into her breath and terror and then releasing her back into the void. Sandra Bullock conveys survival instinct, grief, and physical exhaustion without ever letting the craft show. Ninety minutes pass like doomscrolling. At first, I thought it was a single-shot film, but it still had very long single-shot sequences. Probably one of the most adrenaline-rushed films I have ever watched. The final shot is where the film earns everything it put its audience through. Ryan Stone crawled out of the water, fingers in the mud, pulling herself upright on unsteady legs and feeling gravity for the very first time as something earned rather than given. Stunningly beautiful and quietly devastating. Need to see more of Alfonso Cuaron.
