Critics Consensus

Green Book takes audiences on an excessively smooth ride through bumpy subject matter, although Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen's performances add necessary depth.

Yet Farrelly and his cast deliver the cliches with such sincerity and good cheer that the film won me over anyway.

An enthusiastic and well-intentioned but ultimately clichéd approach is abundantly evident in the final product.

Green Book is a glib, caricatured and insensitive movie that reduces an enduring, dangerous societal problem to a calculated fable with a happy ending. [Full review in Japanese]

The more you think about it in retrospect, [...] the more chances you have of getting madder. (Or it will probably make you feel better about being utterly ignorant about systemic racism; you choose.)

The score and editing are not memorable at all, with some scenes just feeling out of place, and a soundtrack that feels too on the nose at times.

Green Book tells the story of the friendship between the renowned pianist and composer Don Shirley, and his driver and bodyguard Tony “Lip” Vallelonga in the sixties. The different cultures and social classes will be the main focus of the action.

I was looking for an emotional sweet movie and was recommended The Green book. I read reviews and despite on them being controversial, I decided to watch it and I am glad I did. The movie fit my expectations. It was about change of understanding of one white man who didn't understand his privilege of being white until he took on a job to drive black musician for his tour. I find such transformations like little miracle in this difficult world and even if the story not to close to the truth (based on reviews and youtube snaps from Dr. Shelly's relatives), I think it was beautiful adaptation, enhancing the message. It was a bit low pace to some extend, so I took half a star for it, but nevertheless, so worth watching!
