With folk horror elements, only without the ‘horror’ part, Harvest is a very attractive film to look at, making great use of its lush landscapes and complete lack of evident civilisation. I get the feeling that the director worked out the shots before the themes, because it’s a strangely weightless film, treating its subject matter with the kind of flippancy that makes it hard to take anything you’re seeing seriously. I like Caleb Landry Jones but his character is so passive that he always feels like a passenger rathe than a participant. None of my criticisms are severe, but none of my compliments are very strong either. It could have been much more impactful if the screenplay had been tighter, the characters more interesting and the conflict more impactful. As it stands, it’s a very beautiful but very average movie.

A very well acted, moody, creepy, unsettling but also interesting period drama for the first half. Then this overlong drama loses focus and I checked out. I always do love Caleb Landry Jones and he is great again here.

Great adaptation of an incredible book. Successfully created the feeling of a community at ease with itself being confronted/torn apart by new things arriving. Very good acting and sense of place. Loved it.

Slow, and not in a good way. It's not even a slow burn, it's just slow. To call it a horror, or to reference it as being in that genre, is misleading. Folk horror works when it's done well, this is just a rambling story about land ownership. I don't get the hype.
