Its rhetoric may be laconic and folksy, but its fury and its nobility seem distilled from Shakespeare. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Jun 7, 2021

A rich family drama anchored by Robert Mitchum's fine performance and further distinguished by superlative support, by George (two of them, actually). Go to Full Review Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine Nov 5, 2019
Although it is too long and there are some perplexing gaps and ambiguities in the story, this is an interesting and richly atmospheric rural drama with a Deep South locale. Go to Full Review Dwight MacDonald Esquire Magazine Jul 12, 2019
Minnelli milks every last drop of sentiment from the not-at-all distinguished script. And many drops that aren't there. Go to Full Review Raquel Stecher Out of the Past Oct 31, 2018
it deserves more recognition for its exploration of toxic masculinity, its portrayal of a dysfunctional family, Minnelli's excellent direction and the great cast. Go to Full Review Paul Brenner Filmcritic.com Mar 21, 2009

Anthony J @jenkinsdraws Aug 11, 2026 Well acted, but the same theme was done much better by Paul Newman in 'Hud'. See more mark G @Mark_Alan_G. Aug 10, 2026 Played like a Tennessee Williams wannabe story. Just seemed too overdone and fake. And if we are to believe that Robert Mitchum indeed fathered George Peppard in the movie, Mitchum would have had to have been 10 years old when he impregnated the woman. I don't think a society ever existed like the one portrayed in this film, and it was hard to get past such a fake premise. See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Jul 6, 2026 Despite the high production value and a cast full of quality actors, this felt surprisingly fake from the start. It was almost as if everyone had been directed to do a bad job. Add in the heavy-handed melodramatic script and a mediocre print, and there was no reason to keep going. We quit after 20 minutes. See more May 6, 2021 I'm sure it was a big movie in it's time, but I didn't really enoy the story much despite the great cast See more Mar 25, 2018 Its rhetoric may be laconic and folksy, but its fury and its nobility seem distilled from Shakespeare.
