I thought they had forgotten how to make a good Western and I thought the script and all of the actors were 1st class. Felt very realistic of how those times were tough and many lives were lost for very little. Set in the late 1800s, it follows a hardened Army captain tasked with escorting a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family through dangerous territory, and it quickly becomes more about redemption, trauma, and survival than simple frontier action. Christian Bale delivers a restrained and convincing performance, showing a man worn down by years of violence who slowly confronts his own prejudices. The film’s pacing is slow and deliberate, but it fits the tone, allowing the tension and emotional shifts to build naturally. The landscapes are beautifully shot, emphasizing both the harshness and loneliness of the era. While it may not be perfect, Hostiles stands out for its seriousness and character-driven storytelling.
