For Rod Kimble, performing stunts is a way of life, even though he is rather accident-prone. Poor Rod cannot even get any respect from his stepfather, Frank, who beats him up in weekly sparring matches. When Frank falls ill, Rod devises his most outrageous stunt yet to raise money for Frank's operation — and then Rod will kick Frank's butt.

Critics Consensus

Hot Rod has brazen silliness and a few humorous set pieces on its side, but it's far too inconsistent to satisfy all but the least demanding slapstick lovers.

A charmless idiot, a clumsy rip-off of Jackass and one more tiresome exercise in arrested adolescence -- add them up and you have Hot Rod.

I’ve seen this film far too many times, and every time I find myself smiling and laughing my face off. It has a great concept, loads of fun, and delightfully ridiculous one-liners, spoofing major films like Rad, Footloose, Road House, and more. The soundtrack is absolute fire, and it’s fantastic to see Ian McShane and Sissy Spacek reunited on-screen again.
